Happy birthday, Kristin (a few days early), and happy birthday, America!We had a cool, rainy fourth of July today. When I was a kid, my family used to host an annual extended-family cookout. The two main things I remember about those cookouts are: 1. making individual servings of red and blue Jell-o with Cool Whip in the middle and 2. playing croquet in the yard.
Of course we had grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, and we set off the standard pack of fireworks. But it's the Jell-o and croquet that I remember most.
We haven't done those cookouts for several years, but they used to make the fourth of July my favorite holiday of the year.
